5. How do I wash my Keikogi and Hakama?
The following is some important information to take care of your Kendogi and Hakama:
  • Please use cold water to wash both Keikogi and Hakama for long-lasting color.
  • Most modern uniforms don't need to be washed or soaked in vinegar.
  • Detergent use: please use only [Dark Color] detergent for all dark color uniforms.
  • You should never wash with hot water, vinegar, nor with other clothes, as the color from the Aizome (Japanese indigo dye) will come out and stain other clothes.
  • You should also never place them in the dryer, cotton uniforms will shrink one to two sizes.
  • Cotton Hakamas need to be hand-washed, hang dry, and ironed. Do not place the cotton hakama into the washer or else it will lose all the pleats.
  • Do not expose to direct sunlight for drying uniforms.
  • We do not recommend taking the hakama to local dry cleaners for any services. Since most dry cleaners don't know how to handle aizome dyed hakama, they will totally destroy the product.
